Test left and right audio channels

Stereo sound is made of separate channels. A useful speaker test does more than report that an audio node started: it gives you a short left signal, a short right signal, and a combined stereo signal so you can compare what reaches your ears.

Left channel

The left check sends the test tone toward the left side of a stereo output. If you hear it in both ears, your operating system, adapter, or device may be mixing the channels instead of preserving stereo separation.

Right channel

The right check is the matching test for the other side. A silent right channel can come from a loose plug, a damaged cable, an audio balance control, a Bluetooth profile, or a hardware fault.

Stereo output

The Both test plays a centered signal through the pair. It helps confirm normal combined output, but it should not be used alone to prove that each side is routed correctly.

Headphones or speakers

The same sound test works for headphones, earbuds, laptop speakers, external monitors, and many USB or Bluetooth devices. The browser checks its playback path; your response confirms the physical listening result.

A browser sound test can verify that a tone was scheduled and can help you compare channels, but it cannot identify a hidden amplifier fault or measure a calibrated sound-pressure level.

What to do if you hear no sound

Use the result as a troubleshooting clue, not as a final hardware diagnosis. Work from the simplest cause to the most specific: output selection, mute state, browser permissions, balance, connection, and then the device itself.

Check the system output device, mute state, hardware volume buttons, browser tab mute state, and application mixer. Try a known-good video or music file, then return to the sound test. If ordinary audio is silent too, the issue is probably outside this page.

Only one side works

Run Left and Right separately. Reseat the plug, inspect the cable, check the operating system's left/right balance, and test the same headphones or speaker on another device. Bluetooth devices may expose a call profile instead of a full stereo media profile.

Left, Right, and Both are heard

The browser reached the selected output and you reported hearing each channel. This is a useful basic check for speakers, headphones, earbuds, monitors, and USB audio devices. It does not measure loudness, clarity, frequency response, or long-term reliability.

One channel is silent

Repeat the sound test with the same device, then inspect the operating system balance, connector, cable, adapter, and Bluetooth profile. If the same side fails on another device, the fault may be in the headphones or speaker rather than the browser.

Sound Test is intentionally narrow. It helps you test a browser playback path and record your listening response without pretending to be a laboratory meter, hearing screening, or automated hardware certification.

Microphone permission is explicit

The microphone mode uses the browser's input permission only when you start it. The page analyzes the signal locally, shows a simple level, and closes the input tracks when you stop.

Results stay honest

Does this sound test measure volume in decibels?

No. A browser cannot know the calibrated sound pressure at your ears from a normal volume slider. Sound Test reports playback steps and your confirmation; it does not provide a trustworthy dB reading, hearing test, frequency-response graph, or hardware score.

Do I need to allow microphone access?
